HISTORY OF HOW PANDA GET COLOUR

There are two different kinds of pandas, red panda and the giant panda. The giant panda is the most recognizable by their black and white fur and its large size. A male giant panda averages 225 lbs. and may reach 5 to 6 feet in length. The red panda is smaller and looks more like a raccoon. You will notice that the giant panda to feel like a bear, but requires that all four legs to walk. There is much debate whether the panda family descendants of the bear or the raccoon. Recent DNA analysis indicates that red pandas are descendants of the raccoon family while giant pandas more closely related to the family of bears.


The Chinese legend of how the panda acquired its color is a beautiful story.

The legend begins with the panda bear as a totally blank. One day a girl happened to run across a white panda and a leopard fighting. Trying to save the defenseless panda will be charged the leopard with a large bamboo shoot, striking him again and again. The leopard is unaffected by the bamboo and became the girl instead. This act of bravery saved the life of the panda, but the girl lost theirs in the fight. All white pandas held a funeral in honor of the brave girl and wore black armbands as a sign of mourning. The dye of black armbands, moistened by the tears many of the pandas, began to run. When the pandas removed his eyes, the bracelet black marks on the left. To make matters worse the giant panda is slow to reproduce. Multiple births are rare, and even then it's likely that only one survives. The mother panda can only take care of a cub once every two years. It's hard to believe that nobody ever wanted to kill one of these magnificent animals, but it's true. Their skins are highly prized by underground markets in the Far East. The Chinese government has enacted laws to protect them. In fact, the act of poaching a giant panda is punishable by a sentence of life imprisonment.

The only place on Earth that the giant panda living in the wild is in the mountains of central China. The researchers believe that there are fewer than 1,000 of these beautiful animals left, of whom around 300 or so live in captivity. Atlanta is fortunate to have in his zoo 2 of only 4 pandas in U.S. zoos. The other 2 are in the San Diego Zoo. The National Zoo in Washington, DC, recently lost what would have been the 5th in the U.S., a giant panda named Hsing Hsing who died on November 28, 1999. One of the most famous couples consisted of panda Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing. These were presented to President Nixon in 1972 by the Chinese government as a gesture of goodwill after his historic visit to China. Ling Ling died in 1992.Pandas live in the wild is around 18 to 20 years, while those who are living in captivity around 30. The oldest giant panda living in Wuhan Zoo, China, and is an incredible 36 years!
